Project “PortZero” has received funding from the UK’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition to deliver a zero-emission, carbon capture port solution.
A four-company consortium “PortZero” including Seabound, STAX Engineering, Associated Britith Ports (ABP) and Lomar Shipping, has secured £1.1 million (US$1.5 million) in government funding through the UK Department for Transport’s sixth round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC6).
The PortZero project, ”Enabling Zero-Emission Ports via Carbon and Air Pollution Capture from Berthed Vessels”, aims to tackle one of the maritime industry’s most pressing challenges – decarbonizing port operations while improving air quality in port communities.
As stated, the integration of Seabound’s carbon capture technology with STAX’s emissions capture and control barge is intended to demonstrate a scalable approach for reducing port emissions without requiring vessel retrofits or new infrastructure.
The UK government’s investment in PortZero proves there’s real demand for technology that delivers immediate results without forcing ports to choose between operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
…said Mike Walker, CEO, STAX Engineering.
As stated, the solution claims to offer an alternative to shore power, which involves high upfront capital, limited vessel compatibility and slow implementation, evidenced by major European ports having installed or commissioned only 20% of the infrastructure mandated by EU regulations.
We are excited to explore the potential of this innovative solution as we pursue ever better air quality at our ports and support maritime decarbonisation.
