Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, have acquired Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK for their jointly developed liquefied CO2 (LCO2) / methanol carrier.
As announced, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and MOL have received Approval in Principle (AiP) for a vessel based on a low-pressure LCO₂ carrier, designed to transport CO₂ on outbound trips and synthetic methanol on return trips. This dual cargo model aims to eliminate empty voyages and to improve transport efficiency.

Furthermore, as stated, development will continue toward commercialization, in collaboration with supply chain partners. MOL Group is investing in building synthetic fuel and CO₂ supply chains, including through its stake in HIF Global LLC. The LCO₂/methanol carrier is expected to boost economic viability of these supply chains and supports MOL’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 under its “Environmental Vision 2.2.”
MHI Group, via Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, is focusing on energy transition and CCUS value chain development, using marine engineering expertise.
