On August 18, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) completed and delivered the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Al Zuwair at its Ulsan Shipyard.
The vessel will operate under a time-charter contract with QatarEnergy. Al Zuwair is the third of 12 LNG carriers being constructed for QatarEnergy by a joint venture of NYK, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, MISC Berhad, and China LNG Shipping. This delivery is the first of the series built at HHI and also marks the first time the NYK Group will provide ship-management services for the consortium.
The vessel is powered by two X-DF 2.1 iCER dual-fuel engines, which can use both fuel oil and boil-off gas, enhancing fuel efficiency. It also features an air lubrication system and a reliquefaction device to optimize the use of surplus boil-off gas, improving navigation efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Key specifications include a cargo capacity of approximately 174,000 m³, a length of 299 meters, a beam of 46.4 meters, and dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engines.
To remind, QatarEnergy is undergoing a historic expansion of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier fleet to support its ambitious North Field expansion project, which aims to increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million tons per annum to 142 million tons by 2030. The expansion program encompasses a total of 128 LNG carriers.
