On June 18, Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) and Jiangnan Shipyard, a unit of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), signed a major contract to build a 20,000-cubic-meter LNG bunkering vessel.
Designed by SDARI and constructed by Jiangnan, the vessel will incorporate top-tier LNG bunkering technologies, including full electric azimuth propulsion, advanced LNG vapor management systems, and smart ship functionalities. Powered by boil-off gas and fitted with energy-efficient systems, it is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by around 25% and nearly eliminate sulfur oxide (SOx) and particulate matter emissions.
Set for delivery in the first half of 2027, the vessel will enhance Shanghai’s LNG fueling infrastructure, which has already supported more than 200 ship-to-ship bunkering operations.
According to Xinde, the project highlights the collaboration between two major state-owned enterprises and reflects China’s broader push for cleaner maritime energy solutions.
To remind, in late 2024, it was announced that Shanghai is aiming to transform itself into a hub for green shipping in response to tightening global emissions standards.
