The bulk of oil from the MSC Baltic III which ran aground near Wild Cove on February 15 after suffering a power loss, the Canadian Coast Guard stated.
According to the latest update from the Canadian Coast Guard,as of now, the bulk of oil has been removed from the vessel’s internal tanks and efforts are focused on extracting the remaining residual fuel. The estimated amount of heavy fuel and marine gas on board the MSC Baltic III at the time of its grounding was approximately 1,600 metric tons.
Since the previous update, an additional 26 cargo containers have been removed, bringing the total number of containers offloaded to 333. There are 142 containers still remaining on the grounded vessel. The EEMS Dublin continues to support operations in the area, facilitating the transfer of personnel and containers.
Furthermore, on-water and shoreline surveys are ongoing. Oil-related findings, such as small tar stains, have been observed in Cedar Cove and surrounding shorelines and are being cleaned up as they are identified.
Efforts remain focused on eliminating the pollution threat and mitigating the environmental hazards posed by the grounding of the MSC Baltic III.
