Norway’s Enova is providing approximately NOK 362 million in support to seven electric vessels and four charging facilities, marking a major step toward shipping electrification.
Among the projects is a groundbreaking initiative by Eitzen Avanti, which plans to build two battery-powered container ships to operate between Norway, Sweden, and Germany. With battery capacities exceeding 100 MWh and the ability to carry 850 containers, these vessels could become the world’s largest battery-electric container ships.
Furthermore, the Port of Oslo will receive funding to build a dedicated charging station at the Sjursøya container terminal to support these new vessels. Port Director Ingvar M. Mathisen emphasized the importance of Enova’s support in meeting Oslo’s climate goals and praised Eitzen Avanti for leading the way in green maritime innovation.
Other supported projects highlight the diversity of maritime electrification in Norway. Polar Energy Shipco will build a fully electric bulk carrier for transporting minerals along the coast, while Brim Explorer will develop two battery-electric tourist vessels for routes like Ålesund–Geiranger.
Additionally, Lovundlaks is receiving support for two electric workboats and corresponding charging infrastructure at their land bases.
