GC Rieber Shipping, along with GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals, has signed a letter of intent to build a fully electric, battery-powered freight carrier.
The project aims to showcase the commercial and environmental potential of zero-emission coastal shipping and has received grant support from Enova. The vessel will be developed by GC Rieber Shipping’s subsidiary, Polar Energy Shipco, as part of Norway’s national push for sustainable maritime transport.
The vessel will be built in partnership with freight owners GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals. GC Rieber Shipping has also entered into a letter of intent with K. Sætre & Sønner, a bulk and cargo transport specialist, to operate the vessel. It will feature advanced battery systems and shore power integration, significantly cutting emissions and noise compared to diesel-powered ships.
The project represents a concrete move toward achieving long-term climate goals and responding to the growing demand for greener logistics from customers and partners.
Company leaders emphasized the project’s significance in advancing sustainable shipping. Einar Ytredal, CEO of GC Rieber Shipping, stated that Enova’s support accelerates their transition to zero-emission vessels. Meanwhile, Per Gunnar Syrdalen, Chief Commercial Officer at GC Rieber Minerals, highlighted the importance of strong partnerships among freight owners in delivering low-emission transport solutions. Finally, Ingrid Hynne Hoem, Logistics Manager at Franzefoss Minerals, noted that the project supports their long-term climate goals and helps reduce the environmental impact of their operations.
