Hamburg Fleet has announced that is currently testing 100% hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO 100) biofuel on three of its vessels.
The fuel produced from food waste and free of palm oil, is supplied by Friedrich G. Frommann GmbH & Co. and Shell and meets the EU’s RED II sustainability criteria, according to a statement from the Hamburg Port Authority.
Furthermore, Karsten Schönewald, Managing Director, Hamburg Fleet, described HVO 100 as the most practical interim solution for inland waterway vessels. The fuel is reported to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80%.
Although electrification remains the fleet’s main goal, HVO 100 is considered an important temporary option for vessels that cannot yet be electrified.
While Hamburg Fleet remains focused on electrification and innovative propulsion systems, we will only achieve our ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets by complementing these efforts with innovative fuels such as HVO 100.
