BAR Technologies has secured an order to install its WindWings wind propulsion system on two new 250-metre LR2 dual-fuel tankers, Suzuka and Long Beach.
As explained, each ship will be fitted with two 37.5-metre WindWings, which are expected to deliver daily fuel savings of 3 tonnes and cut annual CO₂ emissions by around 2,300 tonnes per vessel. The move builds on the integration of WindWings on Brands Hatch, the world’s first newbuild Aframax tanker equipped with wind-assisted propulsion.
Wind is no longer an experiment or a future option; it’s a proven fuel source that’s ready to deliver real impact today
… emphasised John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies.
The tankers, designed by SDARI and built by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry, will begin construction in late 2025 and are set for delivery in early 2027. They will be flagged under the Marshall Islands and classed by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore.
Simon Bonnett, Deputy Commissioner of Maritime Affairs for the Republic of the Marshall Islands, expressed enthusiasm about being selected as the flag for the new vessels. Meanwhile, Matthieu de Tugny, Executive Vice President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, emphasized that Bureau Veritas’ classification framework ensures the vessels will meet high standards for structural integrity, safety, and sustainable design, demonstrating that systems like WindWings are ready for global deployment.
