Spain’s first-ever ship-to-ship Bio-LNG bunkering operation was completed at the Port of Algeciras, as Axpo delivered over 4,000 cubic metres of ISCC-certified Bio-LNG to the vessel CMA CGM FORT BOURBON.
The Bio-LNG was sourced through a liquefaction process at the Enagás Regasification Plant in Cartagena, which is a vital LNG infrastructure hub in the Mediterranean. Since July 2024, the Cartagena facility has been certified by the European Union’s International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU), ensuring it meets stringent environmental and social criteria.
The success of this bunkering operation at Algeciras builds upon Spain’s expanding LNG bunkering capabilities, with key activities also occurring in ports such as Málaga and Algeciras, further positioning the country as a critical player in the supply of next-generation marine fuels.
This operation demonstrates Axpo’s commitment to pioneering sustainable LNG solutions in the Iberian market and actively supporting the decarbonisation of the maritime sector. We are dedicated to expanding our Bio-LNG portfolio to meet the increasing demand for cleaner marine fuels and help our customers achieve their ambitious emissions targets
… said Daniele Corti, Head Small Scale LNG at Axpo.
This development also supports broader European decarbonisation objectives by demonstrating the flexibility of Spain’s LNG infrastructure to integrate sustainable fuel alternatives.
In 2024, Spanish regasification terminals more than doubled their LNG bunkering loadings compared to the previous year.
