On June 20, the M.V. Cosco Shipping Yangpu, China’s first 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship, was officially delivered by Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry Yangzhou.
According to COSCO, this milestone marks three significant firsts: the first methanol dual-fuel vessel ordered by a Chinese shipowner, the first of its kind built by a Chinese shipyard, and the first to use a domestically made methanol engine. Safety innovations include a triangular-array methanol tank and a freshwater purging system.
In addition to its environmental performance, the ship integrates advanced digital systems. Its hull design and propulsion technologies enhance fuel efficiency, while the world’s largest permanent magnet shaft generator improves operational reliability. Intelligent features like real-time route optimization, equipment monitoring, and safety alerts further boost performance, making it a model for smart, green shipping.
The vessel measures 366 meters in length and 51 meters in width, with a capacity of 16,136 TEUs. It features an 11,000 cubic meter methanol storage tank, allowing long-range voyages without refueling.
The ship sets a benchmark for energy efficiency and emissions reduction. Its EEDI is 54.4% lower than the IMO baseline, and when running on green methanol, it’s expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by about 120,000 tons annually, the equivalent of planting 6.7 million trees., COSCO informs.
