GTT has announced a strategic partnership with China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding to jointly develop next-generation LNG bunkering vessels, aiming to boost their performance, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
The two companies have launched a collaborative innovation project focused on optimizing the design of LNG bunkering vessels through advanced technologies. Central to the initiative is the enhancement of tank design using GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane containment system.
Currently, LNG bunkering vessels operate at an industry standard of 0.7 barg pressure. The new design targets an increase to 1 barg, supported by prior approvals from various classification societies. According to GTT, this higher pressure threshold is expected to deliver several operational advantages, including:
- Extended operational flexibility: The ability to load LNG at higher temperatures as well as the possibility to speed up the LNG delivery.
- Improved energy efficiency: The reduction in the vessel’s electrical power consumption, particularly during stand-by periods, thanks to a lower use of its subcooler.
- Regulatory compliance anticipated: The new design anticipates evolving environmental regulations, including AFNIR recommendations on cold-ironing, thanks to a significant increase in holding time.
This partnership will also evaluate the technical feasibility of increasing the design pressure up to 2 barg. This collaboration reflects the shared commitment of GTT and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding to drive continuous innovation and support the maritime industry’s energy transition.
