Van Oord is expanding its Subsea Rock Installation fleet with two new vessels running on methanol and biofuels, with the first expected in 2028 and the second following within a year.
According to the company, the vessels will also feature automation technologies to improve operational efficiency. Equipped with multi-fuel engines, large battery storage, an energy-efficient hull, and an optimized rock handling system, these vessels aim to reduce CO₂ emissions.
The new vessels will have a loading capacity of 35,000 tonnes, handle large rock sizes, and use a DP-2 dynamic positioning system to maintain stability in difficult sea conditions. They are designed for long-distance operations to minimize fuel consumption and emissions.
The construction of the new vessel will be completed by Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore in China.
Van Oord is at the forefront of the energy transition. These new vessels embody our commitment to innovation, safety, sustainability and efficiency, while supporting the growing demands of our clients and our own net-zero ambitions
… said Maurits den Broeder, Managing Director Offshore Energy.
To remind, in another milestone for the company, an offshore wind turbine installation vessel, the largest of its kind, was handed over to Van Oord in early 2025.
