The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has encouraged everyone in the maritime sector to take part in Plastic Free July by actively reducing plastic waste and adopting responsible garbage management practices.
According to AMSA, Plastic Free July is a global movement aimed at protecting oceans and waterways by encouraging people and organisations to reduce plastic use and prevent waste. The maritime sector plays an important role in tackling plastic litter as part of these efforts.
What you can do
AMSA advised that to promote positive garbage management practices, make sure you:
- Have a garbage management plan. Ships and certain domestic commercial vessel owners and operators must have a garbage management plan.
- Keep a garbage record book. Some vessels also need a garbage record book detailing how garbage is managed, collected, stored, processed, and disposed of.
- Use the right signage. Vessels 12 metres and over must display MARPOL placards.
- Report illegal garbage discharge. You can report illegal discharge of rubbish easily. Call AMSA, go online or contact the local port authority.
Plastic Free July is a global initiative that encourages people to reduce their use of single-use plastics during the month of July, with the aim of minimizing plastic pollution and its harmful impact on the environment. Participants are challenged to avoid items like plastic bags, straws, bottles, and packaging by choosing reusable or eco-friendly alternatives. The campaign raises awareness about the damage plastic waste causes to oceans, wildlife, and ecosystems, inspiring individuals and communities to adopt more sustainable habits. Originating in Australia in 2011, Plastic Free July has grown into an international movement motivating millions to make lasting changes toward a plastic-free lifestyle.
