The Höegh Sunrise is the fifth vessel in Höegh Autoliners’ Aurora Class, a new generation of LNG-fueled car carriers designed to reduce emissions.
With a capacity of 9,100 car equivalent units (CEUs), it is among the largest vessels of its kind and reflects current efforts to transition the shipping industry toward low- and zero-emission technologies, Höegh Autoliners said in a statement.
As the vessel is currently powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), it is allegedly achieving a 58% reduction in carbon emissions per transported vehicle compared to the industry average. It is also equipped for future use of carbon-free ammonia, with the first ammonia-powered operations expected by 2027. Additionally, the Höegh Sunrise can connect to onshore power while docked, allowing it to eliminate emissions during port operations.
Built by China Merchants Heavy Industry and certified by DNV, the Höegh Sunrise is one of 12 Aurora Class vessels planned for delivery through 2027. Each ship includes structural features to support electric vehicle transport and holds both “ammonia ready” and “methanol ready” certifications.
With Höegh Sunrise and the Aurora Class newbuilding program, we are leading the way in addressing emissions in a hard-to-abate sector. We are setting new standards for sustainable deep-sea transportation and taking a major step toward our 2040 zero-emissions goal. As the largest and most environmentally friendly PCTCs ever built, the Aurora Class vessels represent the transformation our segment needs
